Budget change affects teacher retiree health insurance

The latest version of Gov. Paul LePage’s two-year budget package restores health insurance premium support for teachers who retire before they reach age 65.

Under the proposed changes to the Governor’s proposed budget for the two years beginning July 1, state funds would pay 45 percent of health insurance premiums for retired teachers from normal retirement age until they turn 65. The original version of the budget would have eliminated any state health insurance support for teachers from the time they retired until they turned 65.
