The safest way to get to school? The yellow bus

About 81 percent of Maine students rely on the school bus to get them to school each day ready to learn.

And for good reason.

The statistics prove that school buses are the safest way to transport children to and from school each day. In the rare instances when school buses are involved in accidents, the design of a school bus helps to prevent injury.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is unveiling a campaign to raise awareness of the safety benefits of school buses. Check out the graphics below and find more information at School Bus Facts.com.

Visit the Maine DOE’s transportation safety page to learn more about why the school bus is the safest way for students to get to school.

Students are about 50 times more likely to arrive at school alive if they take the bus, than if they drive themselves or ride with friends.

Just 1 percent of student fatalities that happen during normal school travel hours happen to students riding the school bus.

The reasons why the school bus is the safest way for students to get to school

Among others, one of the primary reasons the school bus is the safest way for students to get to school is the rigorous training required of bus drivers -- both before they start driving and while they're on the job.
