Improving elementary school attendance will be the focus of a forum next Tuesday, Jan. 14 in Portland.
Attendance Matters: Moving From Awareness to Action is intended for educators, policy makers, administrators, nurses, counselors, social workers, school board members and other stakeholders interested and dedicated to supporting elementary school students be successful in school. The full day summit is being hosted by Count ME In, an innovative partnership of schools, parents, youth and community organizations working to improve elementary school attendance by increasing the capacity of school staff, community-based organizations, businesses and families to address chronic absenteeism. Count ME In seeks to decrease the number of students with chronic absenteeism in Cumberland County elementary schools by 50 percent by 2018.
Attendance Works Director Hedy Chang, recently recognized as a Champion of Change at the White House, will share proven strategies for advancing student success by addressing chronic absenteeism. Count Me In Project Director Susan Lieberman and Maine DOE Chief Academic Officer Rachelle Tome will also speak and a panel discussion will be held showcasing successful partnerships between schools and businesses. During the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to attend multiple sessions introducing innovative programs and practical resources that could be replicated in schools, organizations and communities to support children and families in their learning and increase attendance, engagement and achievement.
