Department encourages early summer food program planning

The Maine DOE is encouraging districts to begin planning now for their Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

Under Maine law, a school administrative unit (SAU) must offer meals through the SFSP if it has 50 percent or more of its students qualifying for free and reduced school meals and it operates a summer education or recreation program.

Districts may operate their own programs or collaborate with a nonprofit organization. An SAU may choose not to operate the SFSP by a vote of the school board following a public hearing with adequate notice if it is determined that such a program is financially or logistically impracticable.

For more information or technical assistance related to Summer Food Service Programs, please contact the Department’s Child Nutrition Services Specialist Gail Lombardi at gail.lombardi@maine.gov or 624-6876.
