Commission receives notice of 9 charter school proposals

The following is a news release from the Maine Charter School Commission.

AUGUSTA – Nine groups informed the Maine Charter School Commission by Wednesday’s deadline that they plan to submit applications to open public charter schools. Seven of the groups hope to open a school this fall, one in fall 2013, and one is considering both options.

Districts collaborate, adult ed students benefit

Student videographers show impact of the arts

AUGUSTA — A team of four students at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast set out to prove in a three-minute video that the impact of the performing arts stretches well beyond the theater. And a four-student team at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft set out to demonstrate how the arts and a little more color in life can lift a person’s spirit and boost productivity.

Maine program seeks students in need of GED

Peter McGary of Houlton has worked seasonally on potato farms since he was 18. While he loves the work he does, McGary wants more options. Without a high school diploma, however, he’s found opportunities for better jobs limited. So recently, at age 41, McGary applied and was accepted into the Maine High School Equivalency Program (HEP).

Federally funded program wants to partner with more Maine high schools to keep struggling students from dropping out.

BANGOR — The Penobscot Job Corps takes 350 young adults — many at risk of dropping out of school — catches them up on academics and equips them with skills that make them employable.
