A fourth-grade teacher at Waterville’s Albert S. Hall School will be one of 85 math and science teachers from across the United States to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The White House on April 28 named veteran teacher Laurette Darling as a presidential award winner. Darling will travel to Washington, D.C., in May to accept the honor, which comes with a $10,000 prize from the National Science Foundation to be spent at Darling’s discretion.
“A lot of times when you hear about science teacher awards, it’s usually middle school and high school,” Darling told the Morning Sentinel of Waterville. “This is a way of saying, ‘elementary science is important.'”
Darling, of Kents Hill, is current president of the Maine Science Teachers Association. She has been a teacher more than 30 years, with the last four at the Hall School.
