The Maine Department of Education and the Taiwanese Ministry of Education have renewed a strategic partnership that will allow teachers and students in both places to participate in a variety of educational exchanges.
Maine Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen and Cynthia Huang, Cultural Division Director for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, renewed the three-year-old memorandum of understanding between the two agencies at a meeting on Jan. 6.

The two education agencies initially signed a memorandum of understanding in February 2009 as a way to foster international educational collaboration at both the K-12 and post-secondary levels.
The two agencies will establish a special working group to implement a variety of initiatives, including:
- The promotion of exchange opportunities and partner school relationships;
- Exchange opportunities for teachers in training in both locations;
- An arrangement to allow students and teachers from Taiwan to study and teach at the University of Maine;
- An exchange to bring Taiwanese teachers to elementary and secondary schools in Maine;
- A project to recruit Maine teachers for a one-year English teaching stint in Taiwan; and
- Promotion of cultural exchanges, including partnerships with the business community.
