The two education agencies initially signed a memorandum of understanding in February 2009 as a way to foster international educational collaboration at both the K-12 and post-secondary levels.

The two agencies will establish a special working group to implement a variety of initiatives, including:

  • The promotion of exchange opportunities and partner school relationships;
  • Exchange opportunities for teachers in training in both locations;
  • An arrangement to allow students and teachers from Taiwan to study and teach at the University of Maine;
  • An exchange to bring Taiwanese teachers to elementary and secondary schools in Maine;
  • A project to recruit Maine teachers for a one-year English teaching stint in Taiwan; and
  • Promotion of cultural exchanges, including partnerships with the business community.
