Literacy conference emphasizes Common Core planning

The Maine Department of Education’s Summer Literacy Institute will bring together teams of educators to work on school and district plans for implementing the Common Core State Standards for English language arts, as well as the Common Core’s literacy standards for social studies, science and technical subjects.

The Summer Literacy Institute takes place Aug. 20-22 at the Augusta Civic Center and is intended for teams of at least four educators each from individual schools and school districts.

The three-day gathering, called “Common Understanding of Core Learning: Transition Planning for the Common Core State Standards,” will feature a number of workshop sessions that team members will attend together. The conference will also allow time for teams to process information from the workshop sessions and work on their local transition plans.

The registration deadline is June 1. Visit the Maine DOE’s English Language Arts professional development page for more details and registration information.
