School administrative units (SAUs) sometimes become aware that a special education student enrolled in one of their schools has been placed in a residential facility identified as a crisis stabilization unit.
Such placements are, by their nature, intended to be short-term, and are therefore not intended to effect a change of residence. Accordingly, students that enter these units remain enrolled in their home SAUs, which SAUs remain responsible for providing educational services to them. This typically involves arranging for tutoring services and providing classroom materials while the student is in the crisis placement.
When the duration of the placement exceeds 10 days, the SAU should convene the student’s Individualized Education Program team, obtain information about the student’s status and how much longer the student is expected to remain in the placement, and make determinations as to how educational services should be provided going forward.
