TOPSHAM – Maine’s Education Commissioner will celebrate the 57 students who have earned their high school degree at the Merrymeeting Adult Education graduation this Tuesday.
Commissioner Jim Rier, who lives in Topsham where the program is based, will join Class of 2014 student speakers Kylie Patterson and Precene Louis, SAD 75 Superintendent Bradley Smith, Brunswick School District Superintendent Paul Perzanowski and Merrymeeting Adult Education Director Diana McCain in delivering remarks at the ceremony.
Graduates come from Topsham, Brunswick, Harpswell, Bowdoinham, Bowdoin, Freeport, Bath, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls and Richmond and have earned their Adult Education Diploma or high school credential through the GED or HiSET programs.
Of the 57 graduates, the majority are pursuing post-secondary studies and many will receive full financial aid packages.
In addition to the presentation of diplomas, Certified Nursing Assistant students, inductees into the National Adult Educational Honor Society, and adult education partners and volunteers will be recognized at the evening event.
Maine Department of Education Adult Education Director Gail Senese will also attend.
Reflecting the LePage Administration’s commitment to education and workforce development, Rier has made adult education a priority since becoming Commissioner in February, speaking at the Adult Education Hall of Flags Day and to the Maine Adult Education Directors at their spring meeting.
He will participate in two other adult education graduations this spring, including the RSU 52 Adult and Community Education graduation in Turner on May 30 and the Windham/Raymond Adult Education graduation in Windham on June 12.
