Acting Commissioner among speakers at MELMAC conference

The MELMAC Education Foundation held its Maine Educational Loan Marketing Corporation (MELMAC) University conference in Rockland this month. The approximately 325 college access professionals in attendance heard from Senator Brian Langley, USM President Glenn Cummings, and Acting Education Commissioner Bill Beardsley.

Beardsley addressed guidance counsellors saying, “I have to ask, is not Maine’s challenge, transition to outcome-based, proficiency-based, standards-based diplomas a significant step towards this new global education paradigm?   And how does that affect counselling your students into traditional college and career admissions offices?  What a great challenge, for you in this room.”

Other speakers focused on the work that is being done in the Legislature and within our higher education institutions to help support Maine students’ aspiration to receive a post-secondary education. Statewide financial aid resources and college access programing available to school professionals was also on the three-day agenda.
