Federal homeless education amendments effective October

Amendments to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act go into effect October 1. Under these amendments, districts will be subject to some new and expanded requirements.

A webinar pertaining to the changes of these amendments will take place on August 15 from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Presenters will discuss how the ESSA amendments to the McKinney-Vento Act will change local education agency (LEA) and liaison requirements for identifying and serving homeless children and youth. Participants will have multiple opportunities to interact with the presenters and ask questions.

Presenters include Christina Dukes and Jan Moore from the National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) and the Maine Department of Education’s (Maine DOE) McKinney-Vento State Coordinator, Jacinda Goodwin. Registration for the webinar can be found here. The webinar will be recorded and uploaded to the Maine DOE McKinney-Vento Act webpage for future reference.

A follow-up conference call for Q&A time with NCHE and Maine DOE is scheduled for August 30 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration for the conference call can be found here  and is open through August 29 at noon.

Additionally, three face-to-face trainings with NCHE and Maine DOE are currently being scheduled across the state for the week of September 12. These trainings will be specifically designed for all McKinney-Vento liaisons and will focus on the amendments to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act.
