Reading to and or with a child is sometimes taken for granted. But are you aware, the simple act of reading aloud to a child 15 minutes a day for five years results in close to 3,000 minutes of language exposure. This alone can place children on the path to high literacy achievement.
This is why on Tuesday, Feb. 2, Governor Paul LePage and Mrs. LePage will kickoff the Maine Department of Education’s Read to ME Challenge. You can follow the launch on the Maine DOE Facebook page and then it’s your turn.
The challenge will run concurrently with the national Read Aloud for 15 minutes campaign ending March 2 with Read Across America Day.
Some 75 “Challenge Partners” are joining this month-long, statewide campaign with radio and television public service announcements available for broadcast encouraging you to take the “challenge.”
Please consider taking the challenge. Simply share your time reading with a child, capture it on video or in a picture, post it to your Facebook or tweet using the hash tag #ReadtoME or #ReadaloudME, and then challenge others to do the same.
