Maine aquarium to host career day

The Maine State Aquarium and the Maine Department of Marine Resources are inviting high school science teachers and career counselors to bring their students to the 2011 Marine Science Career Day on Nov. 16.

The Marine Science Career Day each year hosts 100 teachers, career counselors and students for a day of seminars hosted by Maine’s marine scientists, aquarium staff, and marine patrol officers. Seminar topics will include Lobster Science and Monitoring, Aquaculture in Maine, Fisheries Biology and Management, and Aquarium Science and Education.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Department of Marine Resources Fisheries Research Laboratory in West Boothbay Harbor.

In addition to participating in the seminars, students will have the chance to speak with presenters about their careers and visit their research labs.

Capacity is limited to 100 people. Teachers and career counselors who have attended in the past can bring up to 10 students. First-time participants can bring up to five students.
