Teachers from five secondary Career & Technical Education schools and two high schools gathered in Augusta on Feb. 1, 2013, to participate in a one-day follow-up training on “Math-in-CTE.”
Math-in-CTE is a teacher professional development program that partners mathematics teachers with teachers from secondary CTE schools in an effort to identify real-world math being taught in the CTE classrooms and to develop lessons to best teach this math to students. The ultimate goal of the program is to improve CTE student math skills in order for them to excel in technical careers.
During this training, math and CTE teachers worked diligently in pairs to develop additional high quality lessons, drawing from online resources developed across the country by similar teams. Trainers for this program included Rich Barratt and Kristy Hastings, precision machine tool instructor and academics instructor, respectively, at the Mid-Coast School of Technology in Rockland; Julie Williams from Mount Ararat High School in Topsham; Michele Mailhot, mathematics specialist for the Maine DOE, and Doug Robertson, Math-in-CTE coordinator at the Department. Participants plan to take their lessons back to implement in their classrooms, as well as to inform colleagues of the program.
