Maine school districts are continuously expanding their capacity to identify and teach English learners (ELs)—and the Maine DOE has developed materials to help educators with this task.
Maine’s population of ELs has grown from 2,748 during the 1999-2000 academic year to 5,221 in 2012-13. The Department offers the following EL guidance and resources to support districts:
- Reminder of federal English language learner requirements
- Complete guidance to serving foreign exchange students
- Program Resource Guide: Serving Maine’s English Learners
- Home Language Survey and Parent Letter
