Some 260 teachers and administrators from 27 Maine schools will gather at the University of Maine on Aug. 9 to draft action plans aimed at improving literacy instruction.
The Maine Department of Education’s Summer Literacy Institute will offer school-based teams of elementary-level educators time and support to start literacy action plans that address a range of topics, including the transition to the Common Core state standards, implementing and using literacy assessments, and using data to improve literacy instruction.
Participants in the Summer Literacy Institute, which wraps up on Aug. 11, have committed to continue working in their teams to finish their plans and implement them after leaving the Summer Institute.
In addition to literacy planning, conference participants will participate in a variety of workshops and attend keynote addresses by Dr. Timothy Rasinski, a literacy education professor at Kent State University and expert on reading fluency; Dr. Ronni Ephraim, former Deputy Superintendent of Pre-K-12 Instruction and Professional Learning at the Los Angeles Unified School District and an expert on literacy leadership; and Jo Robinson, an expert on student engagement in literacy learning.
The Institute is funded jointly by Maine’s Reading First and Content Literacy Project grants.
