Samsung Solve for Tomorrow call for submissions

Maine middle and high schools are invited to enter the annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest for a chance to win a share of $2 million in technology and prizes for their school.

Applications are currently being accepted from teachers in all disciplines through Oct. 31. There is no limit to the number of teachers who can enter from each school.

To apply, teachers must answer a few simple questions about their school and STEM education at www.samsung.com/us/solvefortomorrow.

Prizes will be awarded at each stage of the competition. To say thank you for taking the time to enter, Samsung will be awarding the first 5,000 teachers who apply a select self-paced teacher development course from PBS TeacherLine. Five finalists from each state will be awarded two Galaxy tablets for their school and one winner from each state will receive a $20,000 prize package for their school, including technology to create a video to address this year’s contest challenge: “Show how STEM can be applied to help your local community.” Fifteen national finalists will receive a trip to attend Samsung’s pitch event, where they will present their video to a panel of judges before five national finalists will be awarded a $120,000 technology package for their school, and will be invited to a celebratory event in Washington D.C. to be honored for their hard work.

In the most recent Samsung Solve to Tomorrow Grant, Maine’s own Frank H. Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth was one of 15 national finalists, winning at least $35,000 worth of Samsung equipment. The environmental issue students focused on for that competition was the invasive European Green Crab that is currently having a negative impact on Maine’s shellfish industry and coastal environments.
