Feedback wanted on SMARTER Balanced math specs

The SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium recently released the second draft of its specifications for math content on the next-generation, computer-adaptive assessment it is developing in time for the 2014-15 academic year. The consortium now wants feedback from math teachers and others.

First forum yields ideas on ESEA flexibility

BANGOR — About 45 members of the public – including teachers, administrators and school board members – attended a public forum at Bangor High School on Dec. 8 to hear from Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen about Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility and to share ideas.

Ed commissioner calls for focus on literacy in light of latest NAEP scores

AUGUSTA – Maine Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen said nationwide test results released today are modestly encouraging in some areas, but point to the need for more and better sharing of best practices and resources across the state. He called on his Department and schools to undertake a concerted effort to improve literacy achievement.
