Maine Poetry Out Loud finals Feb. 26
The 2014 Maine State Finals for the national Poetry Out Loud program will take place on Feb. 26 at the Waterville Opera House. Kathleen Shannon, co-anchor of WCSH television’s 207 program, will emcee the event. Janet Ventrella named 2013 Maine History Teacher of the Year
Janet Ventrella, a teacher at Livermore Elementary School in Livermore, has been named the 2013 Maine History Teacher of the Year. Maine students selected for Senate Youth Program
Two Maine students will travel to Washington, D.C. for a week in March to serve as delegates to the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP).

Maine’s History Teacher of the Year nominations due Feb. 1
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, Preserve America and the History Channel annually recognize outstanding American history teachers at the state and national levels. Nominees may be any full-time educators of grades K-12 who teach American history (as a separate subject or through social studies, reading, language arts and other subjects). FIRST LEGO League crowns champions

Call for Senate Youth Program nominees
Maine Senators Susan Collins and Angus King have announced that the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) has begun its statewide selection process. Two Maine students will join 102 other delegates for the program’s 52nd annual Washington Week, held March 8-15.
Math, science research awards open to Maine students
Young scientists ages 13 to 18 with promising research ideas are invited to enter a new annual competition sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). The CTY Cogito Research Awards, which provide recipients up to $600 in funding, aim to offset the costs associated with conducting research in math and science for selected middle and high school students. STEM contest open to Maine students
For the third consecutive year, S. W. Cole Engineering, Inc. will hold a fall contest for schools throughout the company’s service areas to promote science and engineering educational programs. The contest, called “Dig Into Science with S. W. Cole Engineering,” is open to science, math or engineering students in grades 1–12 in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
