A CTE project through a national program adds mobility and color to a former student’s ride

Oxford Hills Technical School students spruced up a van through their auto collision program, but it’s more than just a facelift. Their technical skills and safety knowledge and their attention to detail led to an increased mobility, a little camouflage and a brighter day. Read about the March surprise here.

National FFA Vice President discovers Maine agriculture

February 22-26 was National FFA Week, which made for an impressive week for a national student leader visiting Maine. Formerly known as “Future Farmers of America,” FFA is the leadership training organization for secondary and middle school students enrolled in courses related to agriculture and natural resources, as well as fostering the networking and community outreach efforts of post-secondary students in these areas.

Advanced CTE, a name change for the national association

The National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium unveiled its new name, Advance CTE: State Leaders Connecting Learning to Work. The new name reflects and reaffirms the organization’s long history of serving as the voice of state Career Technical Education (CTE) leaders and its commitment to advancing an innovative CTE system that prepares individuals and the U.S. economy for success.

Meeting at the Crossroads: Identifying pathways to proficiency through technical programs, mathematics and English language arts

Teachers from culinary arts, health occupations, and early childhood education programs worked for two days with mathematics and English language arts (ELA) teachers to find points of intersections where students can demonstrate proficiency of Maine student learning standards. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs have always been proficiency-based as students gain knowledge and skills that leads directly into post-secondary programs and professional licensing. Demonstrating proficiency in CTE programs often involves both an academic approach to gathering information and sharing knowledge, as well as performance assessment that reflects skill with various tools including a variety of technologies and human interaction.

CTE safety program grant

The Maine Career and Technical Education team is pleased to be able to offer secondary CTE schools an opportunity to update and renew their safety checklists and policies. The CTE team has provided a Perkins targeted grant to David Dorr, Director, Somerset Career and Technical Center to facilitate this joint project.
