Buckfield teachers receive agriculture honor

The following is excerpted from a Maine Department of Agriculture press release.

AUGUSTA — Annette Caldwell and Gretchen Kimball, teachers at the Buckfield Junior/Senior High School in Buckfield, Maine, have received one of five top awards in the nation for “Excellence in Teaching about Agriculture.” This award is offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Agriculture in the Classroom (NAITC) Consortium. Teachers from all 50 states are eligible.

Readfield tries reading differently

READFIELD – It’s time for reading class in the second grade at Readfield Elementary School.

Rather than remain in their assigned classrooms, students from the school’s two second-grade classes combine forces, and their teachers break them into reading groups based on ability level.

Governor signs rigorous education standards into law

Maine is 42nd state to approve Common Core state standards, allowing schools and teachers to plan their curriculum.

AUGUSTA — Maine became the 42nd state to approve the Common Core state standards when Gov. Paul LePage signed L.D. 12 into law on Friday. The measure passed both the House and Senate unanimously. Adopting the standards means Maine teachers will have a clear set of standards to work with, and will be able to tailor their teaching to the new, rigorous expectations of what students should know and be able to do.

English teachers focus on technology

English teachers can use blogs, poetry slams and graphic novels to craft engaging lessons that appeal to students who don’t learn best by reading books and writing papers.

A teacher in the southern Maine town of Sanford can teach Advanced Placement English to students located almost 400 miles to his north, in the town of St. Agatha.

State Assessment Results Released
