EPS High-Cost Out-of-District Report (EF-S-214) Open for Reporting on March 1, 2020

The EF-S-214, also known as the EPS High-Cost Out-of-District Report, will be open for reporting by Maine public schools on March 1 in the Department’s NEO Portal. This report is Due April 15, 2020.

We strongly encourage users to sign into the report as early as possible to allow time for data entry and completion of the two-step submission process. To provide state subsidy support in the current fiscal year using information provided on the report, Department staff needs time to review and approve the information by April 15. | More

Regulatory Alert Update:  Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Official Delays Entry Level Driver Training (ELD) Rule

Changes in Statute Ease Access to Healthcare for Maine’s Homeless Youth

Changes to Maine statutes, enabling some minors to consent for health services, went into effect this year.  LD 1275, An Act to Support Access to Health Services for Homeless Youth in Maine, amended Title 22, Chapter 260 to make it easier for youth who are no longer living with or dependent upon a parent or guardian to access medical, dental, mental, and other health services. | More

Approval of FY 2020 School Revolving Renovation Fund Applications

Maine Department of Education has awarded $25.2 million in School Revolving Renovation Fund (SRRF) loans to 28 SAUs. The loans will be used to complete 105 health, safety and compliance projects at 62 schools, including structural roof repairs, indoor air quality improvements, ADA upgrades, hazardous material removal, life safety renovations, and security enhancements. | More

The amount of time young people spend in school provides an excellent opportunity to help improve the health status of children and adolescents. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed the School Health Profiles (SHP) as a tool to measure progress in the implementation of school policies and practices. In October of 2019, at  the request of Maine Department of Education (MDOE), technical assistance personnel from the IDEA Early Child Technical Assistance Center (ECTA) facilitated seven regional stakeholder groups to gain additional understanding of SAUs’ perspectives on the proposed transition of the transfer of responsibility for special education services for children, ages 3 to 5, to the public schools. Alcohol is the most frequently used substance by adolescents in Maine.  Almost one of every four Maine high school students used alcohol in the past 30 days, and more than one third of those students reported binge drinking (2017 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey).  Alcohol consumption by students is impacted by factors such as low perception of harm, low perception of getting caught, and ease of access. | More  

Maine Music Educators Help Root Modern Band Curriculum into Maine Schools

Educators from across the state gathered at Orono High School recently for their Modern Band 102 lesson, a second professional learning opportunity available through the Maine Kids Rock Program. Delivered by Little Kids Rock Educator Spencer Hale, the class gave educators the opportunity to fine tune their technique, and to build upon what they had learned in the previous modern band lessons they’ve been participating. | More
