Commissioner’s Update – December 19, 2013

From the Maine DOE

On Saturday, many of us paused to remember the courage of so many in the face of the evil of one on the anniversary of the senseless school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary.  Just one day before, a  17-year-old senior was critically injured by a classmate, who later shot himself, in a shooting at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, just 10 miles away from Columbine, another tragic reminder of our need to always be prepared even for the most unthinkable.

Here in Maine, schools have always taken the safety and security of their students and staff seriously, but even more so since Newtown.

Commissioner’s Update – December 5, 2013

From the Maine DOE

Maine schools have long been looked to as national leaders in education innovation.

That’s why I am not surprised that Education Week recently named three of our state’s schools to a list of those across the country worth visiting.

Among the 35 high schools named in Tom Vander Ark’s “On Innovation” column because they “personalize and blend learning; they challenge students with real work and ask them to show what they know” were Casco Bay High School in Portland and Poland Regional High School.

Last Friday, I had the privilege of attending the annual Teacher of the Year banquet, hosted at Unum’s Portland campus.

Commissioner’s Update – November 14, 2013

From the Maine DOE

There has recently been widespread national media coverage about the rush for test-takers to complete their GED before a new version of the high school equivalency exam is released in January and their previous scores are deleted.

That news has made some Mainers nervous, but they shouldn’t be.

Commissioner’s Update – November 7, 2013

From the Maine DOE

In August, the Department announced that we’d secured federal flexibility for Maine schools in the form of a two-year waiver from some provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

At the heart of Maine’s approved plan is a system of differentiated recognition, accountability and support for Maine’s 380 Title I-served schools.

Commissioner’s Update – October 31, 2013

From the Maine DOE

Improving educator effectiveness is the single most important action we can take for our students. Study after study shows that students who are assigned to effective teachers make noticeably more academic progress than those who are not.

Knowing this, Maine DOE is committed to supporting our state’s school administrative units to ensure there is an effective educator in every single classroom. Earlier this month we named longtime English teacher Mary Paine as our first-ever Educator Effectiveness Coordinator.

Commissioner’s Update – October 24, 2013

From the Maine DOE

Last week, we released the statewide results from the 2012-13 Maine High School Assessment (MHSA).

The good news? Proficiency in math and reading is on the rise again in our high schools, suggesting students are better prepared for success in college and their careers.

Most notable was the nearly 2 percent increase in the number of tested students who achieved proficiency or above in critical reading, up from 47.2 percent in 2011-12 to 48.9 percent in 2012-13, with 8.6 percent of those students exceeding proficiency standards. The percentage of students who tested proficient or above in math also showed a positive uptick, from 47.2 percent in 2011-12 to 48.1 percent in 2012-13, with a record high 4.7 percent of those students exceeding proficiency expectations.
