Maine DOE and the Maine Arts Commission invite visual and performing arts educators to attend a half-day workshop led by Cheryl Hulteen, author of YES YES GOOD: The heART of Teaching, during the Maine International Conference on the Arts. Participants of the workshop, Teaching Artful Practice/Practice Artful Teaching, will create personal artful pathways for students to express and explore creative voice through the arts.

English language teacher leaders attend ESL Summer Academy at UMaine
English learner educators from twenty-five school districts participated in the ESL Summer Academy at UMaine in Orono where participants engaged in activities to facilitate professional development planning based on the needs of their schools and districts. This valuable training supports educators as they become in-house facilitators, building capacity within districts to develop all teachers into teachers of English language to further support the needs of all students.

Maine STEM Summit and grant competition for educators
Maine DOE encourages educators to attend the upcoming Maine STEM Summit on Friday, Nov. 18 at Colby College in Waterville. This summit will provide an opportunity to foster discussion, engagement, and innovation across the education, workforce, and technology sectors of Maine. This year, K-12 educators are encouraged to apply for the first annual STEM Education Innovation Challenge Grant Competition to fund innovative projects in the classroom. Finalists of the challenge will present their pitches at the summit.

The Maine Department of Education sponsored the forty-fifth annual Maine School Transportation Safety Conference in collaboration with the Maine State Police and Maine Association for Pupil Transportation last month.
Summer Institute educates over half of state’s school nurses
The Maine Department of Education hosted the 2016 School Nurse Summer Institute, Kaleidoscope of School Nursing Practice last week at Bates College in Lewiston. Major focuses this year included the federal and state laws and rules related to school nurse practice in Maine, increased knowledge and assessment skills, and more.

2016 Summer Literacy Institute expected to draw nearly 400 educators
AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Education’s literacy team is conducting one-day workshops in Portland and Brewer this month to support Maine educators as they continue to develop proficiency systems in their schools. Sessions will focus on development of effective routines and strategies that have the greatest impact on student achievement.

Making a Difference through Schoolsite Health Promotion and Wellness Programs
The Maine Department of Education hosted the 2016 Maine School Wellness Summit, Inspiring the Future!, at Bates College on June 22 and 23. Just over 100 participants representing 43 school administrative units and seven school-supporting organizations joined the conference.
