State awards $1.63 million through a grant to help a struggling school

Funding granted from the Maine Department of Education will help transform the Auburn school by increasing student achievement, teacher effectiveness and engaging parent and community support.

AUBURN – Washburn Elementary School in Auburn will use just over $1.63 million in School Improvement Grant (SIG) funding awarded by the Maine Department of Education to focus on raising student proficiency in math by 30 percent and reading by 35 percent over the next five years.

School Nurses aim to improve the health of our kids

Eight school nurses from Maine were among the more than 1,300 school nurses from around the country that met in Philadelphia last month at the National Association of School Nurses Annual Conference, aimed at improving the health of school-age children.

Summer training available for teachers

The New England Institute for Teacher Education is offering a number of professional development opportunities for Maine educators this summer. College credit is awarded for each course and can be directly applied toward teacher certification or endorsement. NEI courses are designed for classroom and specialist teachers, school administrators, educational technicians and other adult learners with an interest in expanding their knowledge in the field.

The Maine DOE and the Educational Plant Maintenance Association of Maine invite superintendents, facilities directors, business managers, maintenance teams and custodial staff to the 47th Annual School Facilities Conference at Colby College on June 23-25. Registration to the conference is free for public school staff.
