Maine DOE recognizes reward schools
Last summer, the Department received approval for an accountability waiver under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This waiver provides flexibility in meeting federal accountability requirements by allowing Maine to implement its own tiered statewide system of support.
Proficiency in World Languages more than just vocabulary
As Maine moves to a proficiency-based diploma, students will be required to demonstrate proficiency in content areas including World Languages.
World Languages are specific linguistic systems that involve not just vocabulary or “term sets,” but also reveal perspectives, expose cultures, allow students to interpret authentic cultural materials and engage in conversation in languages other than their own, and are organized and expressed through a structuring grammar and syntax. Regional standards-based instruction and assessment workshop for World Language teachers
The Standards-Based Instruction and Assessment Initiative is an ongoing collaborative effort between the Maine DOE, the Foreign Language Association of Maine and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Regional workshops are being offered through the collaborative to educate and support World Language teachers on standards-based instruction and assessment of student proficiency as districts implement the proficiency-based diploma law. Guiding Principles performance assessment tasks to support proficiency-based diplomas
The Maine DOE is currently collaborating with the Maine Curriculum Leaders Association and the Cohort for Customized Learning to develop performance assessment tasks aligned to the Guiding Principles of the Maine Learning Results. The Guiding Principles include five areas: being a clear and effective communicator, a self-directed and life-long learner, a creative and practical problem solver, a responsible and involved citizen, and an integrative and informed thinker. DOE publishes policy on standards-based IEP goals
Maine’s transition to a proficiency-based diploma by 2018 is underway. Already, many school administrative units are planning spring outreach to the class entering high school next fall as those students will be the first to graduate having demonstrated mastery of all State standards in the eight content areas of the Maine Learning Results.
