Greene school shows its stuff to Ed Commissioner

Teachers say they are eager to use new academic standards and talk about their success in raising student achievement.

GREENE — The students at Greene Central School have made steady progress in reading ever since their school fell short of federal testing benchmarks four years ago.

Using federal school improvement money, staff members developed a plan that emphasized intensive training for teachers and using regular classroom tests to determine how to help students make progress, according to Principal Pamela Doyen.

State Assessment Results Released

AUGUSTA – The Maine Department of Education released the results Tuesday of the fall 2010 New England Common Assessment Program of testing in reading, writing and mathematics in grades 3 through 8.

Statement from Acting Commissioner Angela Faherty regarding the release of the final Common Core State Standards

The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers released a set of state-led Common Core State Standards in Atlanta today. Acting Commissioner Angela Faherty issued the following statement:

Maine already has some of the most rigorous educational standards in the country, and was one of the first states in 1997 to adopt state standards. Two years ago, we joined with three other New England states to participate in common, rigorous standards. Because of our experience and our intent not to lower our standards in any way, our staff and many Maine teachers and other educators have been actively engaged in the development of the Common Core State Standards. I want to thank the dozens of Maine teachers, curriculum leaders and others who participated in reviewing the standards, either at our request or on their own. We are proud to have been part of this work developing clear and rigorous expectations for students.

Educators, Public Invited to Education Reform Session

International expert in standards-based education, education commissioner to explain Maine’s work with RISC

AUGUSTA – Every 26 seconds, a student drops out of high school in America. More than 3,000 students each year in Maine do not graduate with their class.

Rich DeLorenzo, co-founder of the non-profit Re-Inventing Schools Coalition Foundation, and Maine Education Commissioner Susan Gendron will present an overview of standards-based education and how it is engaging students and re-shaping education in Maine and elsewhere.
