The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is now accepting applications for exceptional high school students interested in a laboratory research experience at MDI Biological Laboratory in the summer of 2015. Students must be nominated in order to apply. MDI Biological Laboratory usually awards 10 high school fellowships each summer.
In an effort to enhance Maine Native American Studies lessons, the Secretary of State is sponsoring an essay contest in which middle and high school students explore at least one aspect of Maine Native American history.

Maine schools are encouraged to enter the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, a creative and collaborative competition that offers up to $20,000 in grants for winning middle schools and high schools. Designed to ignite students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the Challenge shows students exciting new possibilities for their futures, opening doors they may never have known were there.

The deadline for the 18th annual Margaret Chase Smith Essay Contest is April 1. In honor of Senator Smith’s trailblazing run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1964, the theme this year is to assess the changes the United States has undergone over the past 50 years. The Maine Arts Commission, in partnership with the First Lady of Maine Ann LePage, is issuing a call for student art for inclusion in the spring 2014 Maine Youth Excellence in Art exhibition in Augusta.
Maine Senators Susan Collins and Angus King have announced that the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) has begun its statewide selection process. Two Maine students will join 102 other delegates for the program’s 52nd annual Washington Week, held March 8-15.

An annual competition that provides high school students the opportunity to work on real-world engineering challenges in a team environment is now open for registration. The 2013-14 Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) will focus on agriculture, with the overarching goal of increasing the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce.
