The U.S. Department of Education has awarded more than $15.1 million in Enhanced Assessment Grants (EAGs) to three state education agencies—North Carolina, Maryland and Texas—to develop or enhance their Kindergarten Entry Assessments (KEA).
Bernhardt named coordinator for standards and instruction
Anita Bernhardt, the Maine DOE’s science and technology content specialist for the past six years, has been named the Department’s new coordinator for standards and instruction. The restructured position reflects the Department’s efforts to better support all Maine schools in their improvement efforts.

School-located vaccine clinics (SLVCs) will be offered during the 2013-14 influenza season thanks to the continued support of the Maine DOE, the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Maine Immunization Program.
Complimentary 2013-14 law books sent to all superintendents
The Maine DOE purchased enough copies of the “Maine Education and School Statutes” 2013-14 edition law book to provide one at no charge to each superintendent of schools.

Learn to engage students with Next Gen Science Standards
Teachers and curriculum leaders are invited to attend the Maine Curriculum Leaders’ Association conference on the Framework for K-12 Science and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) held Oct. 21-22. The event, “Engaging All Students with the NGSS,” will feature Brett Moulding, nationally-recognized NGSS implementation expert, as well as Maine science teachers.

State of Maine approves new virtual high school program
The Maine DOE has granted the Virtual High School (VHS) Collaborative approved online learning provider status. The Department has found VHS courses to meet the State’s standards, enabling middle and high schools statewide to partner with VHS.

Leased space approvals now posted
The Maine DOE has completed its review of fiscal year 2014 instructional leased space applications and posted the results online. School administrative units that submitted applications may learn the status of their applications by visiting the web page. Approvals are indicated in the yellow column labeled “Approved by Department of Education for FY ’14.”
