The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is offering schools grants of up to $1,000 each in support of service-learning projects that result in protections for local streams, lakes and rivers.
State seeks $32 million to ensure high-quality early learning and development experiences for children before kindergarten
AUGUSTA – The Maine Department of Education and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services submitted a joint application this week for $32.2 million in a federal grant competition. The proposal aims to strengthen the quality of Maine’s early childhood programs and make them available to more high-needs children.

This month, we bring you more news to celebrate from 17 schools in the Portland area that have won awards in the HealthierUS School Challenge, the latest developments on the implementation of Maine’s new public charter schools law, dispatches from three recent training events attended by Maine teachers, and preliminary thoughts from Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen on Maine’s efforts to secure a waiver from the provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Today, though, we bring you news about two ways the Department of Education is working to make it easier for our school districts to manage their central-office operations and, as a result, spend more of their resources where they should be spent — in the classroom.
First, in today’s update, we’re announcing that the Department has signed a contract with Pearson to make its PowerSchool product a second, state-supported student information system for Maine schools. (We have already been supporting district implementation of Infinite Campus.) We’re also offering a reminder about Transfinder — a software program the Department offers to school districts at no charge to help them plan more efficient school bus routes that result in savings.
Both announcements are part of the Department of Education’s efforts to be more of a resource to our school districts — all in support of the teaching and learning at the core of our mission.
PORTLAND – More than 200 arts educators from across Maine gathered at the University of Southern Maine on Oct. 7 to work on integrating assessment into their classrooms.
National School Bus Safety Week will raise awareness about safety on the school bus and challenge students to create posters promoting a special safety-related theme.
A special state panel formed to review Maine’s Early Childhood Learning Guidelines is seeking input from kindergarten teachers. The input will inform the panel’s revisions to the 2005 document.
