Maine DOE reminds schools of roof snow load hazard

The Maine DOE is reminding districts that the heavy snowfall this winter may be straining school roofs.

Districts are encouraged to take appropriate action where necessary to protect the safety of students and staff by ensuring the integrity of school buildings. Even recently constructed schools may be susceptible to extreme snow loads. Additionally, many Maine schools have added insulation in order to conserve energy but as a result, more snow can accumulate on roofs where previously the snow was melted by the escaping heat.

While questions about roof loads are best directed to a registered structural engineer, for more information or technical assistance from the Department, please contact School Facilities Director Scott Brown at 624-6848 or scott.brown@maine.gov.
