Students from all over the state were recognized earlier this month for participating in the Maine Secretary of State’s Eighth Grade Citizenship Award and the Maine Constitution Essay and Poster Contest.

Summer poster contest promotes school attendance

Students ages 6-17 are invited to participate in Count ME In’s Second Annual Poster Contest to share their views on why school attendance is important now through July 19. The winning entries will be used to promote Attendance Awareness Month, celebrated in September 2016.

Maine Curriculum Leader of the Year announced

The Maine Curriculum Leaders’ Association recently selected  Assistant Superintendent of Westbrook School Department Dr. Peter Lancia, as Maine’s 2016 Curriculum Leader of the Year. This is not Lancia’s first award, having been Maine’s 2002 Teacher of the Year.

2017 Teacher of the Year semifinalists announced

The Maine Department of Education in partnership with Educate Maine, is pleased to announce eight teachers as semifinalists for Maine’s 2017 Teacher of the Year. They were chosen from the 2016 County Teachers of the Year, who were honored in May at a celebration held in Augusta.

Future commercial student truck drivers honored

Last month, students from four Career and Technical Centers competed at the Professional Drivers Championship in the “Future Truckers” division at Dysart’s Transportation in Hermon. Selected students from Region 3 (Lincoln area), Region 9 (Rumford area), Tri-County Technical Center (Dexter area), and Westbrook Regional Vocational Center (Westbrook area) competed at this event. The students were complimented and encouraged by fellow competitors, company owners, commercial inspectors, law enforcement officers, as well as spectators and sponsors.

Schools in RSU 17 recognized with prestigious award

All eight elementary schools in RSU 17 were recognized as bronze award winners of USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) at an assembly at Paris Elementary School. The awarded schools were Agnes Gray School, Guy E. Rowe School, Hebron Station School, Harrison Elementary School, Otisfield Community School, Oxford Elementary School, Paris Elementary, and Waterford Memorial School.

Students named winners of Constitution Essay and Poster Contest

Students from across the state took part in the annual Maine Constitution Essay and Poster Contest which allows students from grades K through 12 to participate, with older students submitting essays regarding the Maine Constitution, voting and democracy; and younger students creating posters reflecting Maine history or symbols.

Maine History Teacher of the Year named

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History has named a Maranacook Community High School educator as Maine History Teacher of the Year. Shane Gower has been teaching at the school in Readfield since 1998 where he currently teaches U.S. History and Advanced Placement U.S. History, serves as the Social Studies Department Learning Leader, and is a senior class advisor. He is a Maine Social Studies Community Teacher-Leader, Vice President of the Maine Council for the Social Studies and was selected to participate in the prestigious Understanding Sacrifice Teacher Institute.
