Educator talent pool recommendations due soon

The Maine Department of Education is accepting recommendations through April 28 for the 2016 Maine Educator Talent Pool. These distinguished educators may be considered for membership on local and state advisory boards and task forces, as well as be candidates for special recognition through the Department.

The claw is the law

Last month, some third grade students from Brewer came to Augusta promoting the idea of naming the lobster Maine’s official crustacean. Once the Legislature approved the idea, the students got to witness first-hand how their idea actually became law. Governor Paul R. LePage joined the young leaders in Brewer at their school this week, and the following media accounts capture the moment.

A CTE project through a national program adds mobility and color to a former student’s ride

Oxford Hills Technical School students spruced up a van through their auto collision program, but it’s more than just a facelift. Their technical skills and safety knowledge and their attention to detail led to an increased mobility, a little camouflage and a brighter day. Read about the March surprise here.

Building safe and supportive school environments

Many people who grow up in Maine experience small town pride and friendly neighbors, which helps create a welcoming community in a school. School is considered a place that is safe because there are caring adults, supportive friends, and opportunity through extra-curricular activities to explore interests.  No matter where a student lives though, today some students feel they are not safe at school. Some feel they do not all have supports, and some feel they are not given opportunities to shine through unique experiences.

Maine DOE staff recognized for years of service

Acting Education Commissioner Bill Beardsley honored 19 team members for years of service today at the Department, representing a long-standing commitment to Maine’s citizens. Collectively, this group has dedicated over 560 years as employees of State government.
