The first week of February is National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). School counselors uniquely contribute to the educational programming in our schools through comprehensively designed behavior, academic, and college and career supports. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students succeed in school and plan for a career.

Please note ALL superintendents of public school districts, school administrators from 60% publicly funded private schools, and charter schools must recertify.
Maine DOE recently discovered and promptly fixed a technical issue related to the State’s data system for calculating graduation rates. As a result, all superintendents from public school districts, school administrators from 60 percent publicly funded private schools, and public charter schools must reexamine and recertify data in NEO. We ask that this process be completed no later than Friday, Feb. 5.

The Maine DOE is seeking recommendations through April 28 for the 2016 Maine Educator Talent Pool. These distinguished educators may be considered for membership on local and state advisory boards and task forces, as well as be candidates for special recognition through the Department.
Maine is fortunate to have a rich base of veteran educators represented in the current talent pool. They have been and continue to be a valuable resource in our state efforts. What is particularly lacking at this time is representation from educators relatively new to the profession who demonstrate unusual instructional and leadership ability. Such persons exhibit strong potential for professional leadership and inspiring presence that impacts students, colleagues and community.
As a result, the Department is currently seeking elementary educators (grades K-5) relatively new to the profession (five to 18 years of experience) who demonstrate a one-of-a-kind instructional ability; inspire their students, colleagues and community members; and have strong leadership potential. Candidates are building-level personnel and typically classroom teachers who are recognized by peers and supervisors as unique in their leadership and results with students. Occasionally a principal or specialist is considered. Of special interest are educators who are outstanding but have not received other recognition.

The Maine Legislative action of the First Regular Session of the 127th Legislature, in the budget bill, Public Law 2015, Chapter 267 proposed that the Maine Department of Education be authorized to designate three community schools established in accordance with 20-A MRSA Chapter 333 as part of a five-year pilot project beginning in the 2016-17 school year.

Maine DOE has awarded $7.4 million in School Revolving Renovation Fund (SRRF) loans to 13 school districts. The loans will be used to complete 37 health, safety and compliance projects at 21 schools including structural roof repairs, ADA upgrades, and hazardous material removal. A portion of each loan is considered a grant and is forgiven while the remaining balance of the loan is paid back at a zero percent interest rate.
