Maine DOE will close the 2011-12 school year as of Saturday, June 30. It is imperative that schools properly exit all students who are not expected to return in the 2012-13 school year. Date set for 2013 Youth Health Survey
The 2013 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey will be administered during the weeks of February 4 and 11, 2013. Superintendents will be contacted again in August with further details about the survey.

The Maine Education Data Management System ARRA data reporting module closes for school year 2012 reporting on Friday, July 6, 2012.
Opportunity to attend autism training
UPDATED: The Maine Department of Education will host a three-session autism team training for school districts beginning in November 2012. To be considered for participation in the training sessions, the application must be completed no later than September 1, 2012.
High school students compete in international science fair
For the first time ever, students from Maine competed in the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held this year in Pittsburgh, Penn. Meagan Currie of Greely High School in Cumberland and Sam Wood of Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham traveled with their teacher/mentors and parents to represent Maine at this competition.

Students serious about recycling at Horace Mitchell
Imagine trying to teach over 100 kindergarten students how to recycle. At the Horace Mitchell Primary School in Kittery, students have taken charge of their recycling program in a major way, and they are learning how to be good stewards to the environment in the process.
This year, third grade students wrote and presented proposals to Principal David Foster about why they wanted to serve on a school-wide “Green Team.” Upon student selection, the group began planning strategies to make the school “greener.”

Commissioner’s Update – June 21, 2012
In the past week the Maine Charter School Commission held hearings on three applications for public charter schools to open this fall. It’s a tight time schedule, but Commission members are putting in many hours to give each application a thorough review. They are striking a balance between the need to provide students and families with choices, and the imperative that they closely follow the criteria laid out for them.
