AUGUSTA – Governor Paul LePage on Wednesday issued an executive order directing the Maine Department of Education to develop a plan for expanding the digital learning opportunities available to Maine students.

Test results released
Maine prepares for move to more advanced assessment system in three years
AUGUSTA – Maine students improved slightly in reading and more significantly in math in the latest New England Common Assessment Program tests, taken in October 2011. In writing, there was a slight decrease.
Subsidy to be withheld for missing audits
The Maine Department of Education will begin to withhold state subsidy payments for school units that have not submitted financial audits by Feb. 15.

Report calls for expanded access to college courses for high school students
AUGUSTA – A report released Monday outlines a series of steps toward realizing Gov. Paul LePage’s goal of getting more Maine students to take courses for college credit while still in high school and make faster progress toward earning two- and four-year degrees.

Student videographers show impact of the arts
AUGUSTA — A team of four students at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast set out to prove in a three-minute video that the impact of the performing arts stretches well beyond the theater. And a four-student team at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft set out to demonstrate how the arts and a little more color in life can lift a person’s spirit and boost productivity.

Moving to a learner-centered system

It’s been a busy and exciting month for us as we advance our efforts to move Maine to an education system that is centered around students.
Feedback has started to come in about our newly released strategic plan, “Education Evolving: Maine’s Plan for Putting Learners First.” We appreciate the constructive suggestions and comments from those who have taken time to read the document, and we actively encourage more feedback.
Winter trainings focus on PBIS
The Southern Maine Area Resource Team for Schools is offering training sessions this winter focused on implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.
Special ed rule change proposals revised
The Maine Department of Education has revised its proposed changes to the Maine Unified Special Education Regulations in response to comments from the public.
