Principals may submit nominees for Senate Youth Program

Two student leaders from Maine will be selected to participate in the 51st annual United States Senate Youth Program to be held in Washington, D.C., March 9-16, 2013. The program is sponsored by the United States Senate and funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

In addition to the all-expenses paid trip to observe the federal government in action, delegates will each receive a $5,000 scholarship. Student delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Franco-American studies resource guide available

The Maine Department of Education, in cooperation with Franco-American specialists from the University of Maine System, has created a resource guide to help K-12 teachers and students locate available Franco-American resources about Maine and New England.

This week I took part in the first meeting of the school choice work group.

As a state, we’ve moved past discussing whether or not students in Maine should have public school choice. Our legislatively created work group is responsible for finding a model that can work for enabling students to enroll in public schools in districts other than the one in which they live. A model that addresses funding, transportation and, most importantly, equitable education opportunities for all students, including special populations.

Report cites career and technical education as a pathway to success

The following is a news release from the Governor’s Office:

AUGUSTA – Today, the LePage administration shared a report released Tuesday by Georgetown University which promotes career and technical education – in both high school and in post-secondary programs – as a significant path to good-paying jobs. The report found that 29 million well-paying middle class jobs go to workers without bachelor’s degrees.

Charter school commission gets new members, 8 notices of proposals

AUGUSTA – The Maine Charter School Commission today announced the State Board of Education’s appointment of two new members and that eight groups submitted notice as of Monday that they plan to submit applications to open public charter schools.
