The Maine Migrant Education Program survey has been updated for the 2012-13 school year, and the Department of Education is requesting that school units distribute it to all newly enrolled students.

The White House honored Linda St. Andre, principal of Governor James B. Longley Elementary School in Lewiston, among 12 distinguished school turnaround leaders named “Champions of Change” last week.
When St. Andre became principal of Longley in 2010, the school had been identified as one of Maine’s lowest performing schools and was in the process of accepting a federal School Improvement Grant (SIG). As a result, Longley became the first Maine school to implement the turnaround model.
Rule changes proposed for the Maine Department of Education, Rule Chapter 13, Qualifying Examinations for Teachers, Educational Specialists and Administrators, have been finally adopted.
Schools that receive federal Title I funds, have poverty rates of at least 40 percent and have approved Title IA Schoolwide Plans are eligible to use their Title I funds – and funds from other sources – to develop “schoolwide programs.”

Forty arts educators met at Maine College of Art in Portland for a four-day summer institute in early August during phase two of the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI).
During the institute, teacher leaders – representing dance, music, theater and visual arts educators from the elementary, middle and high school levels and all regions of Maine – developed workshops that they will provide throughout the state during the upcoming school year. The institute focused on assessment, technology, leadership and creativity.
