Best practices for school pesticide use now available online

The Maine Board of Pesticides Control has recently developed best management practices for pesticide use on school grounds and published them on the Department of Agriculture’s integrated pest management website: thinkfirstspraylast.org/schoolipm.

Deer Isle, Stonington get creative in seeking plan ideas

The schools in Deer Isle and Stonington want input from the community so the school system can craft a long-term strategic plan. Turns out, a sandwich board is part of the solution.

During two recent basketball games, Deer Isle-Stonington High School students Chelsea Brown, Kasi Billings and Morgan Shepherd wore a sandwich board with four questions. Residents were encouraged to write their ideas on the board or submit them on paper.

Second round of special education scholarships expands eligibility to more personnel

Currently, one of eight Maine teachers who work with special-needs students is not fully certified.

In a second round of scholarships for special education personnel, the Maine Department of Education is accepting applications from a broader group of educators than in the previous round, including occupational therapists, speech/language therapists, and individuals interested in becoming either orientation and mobility specialists or teachers for the visually impaired. Currently employed educational technicians and special education teachers are also eligible.

Welcome to the May edition of Maine DOE Updates.

It’s been a busy and important month here in the education world.

It kicked off with Teacher Appreciation Week, a special time to say thank you to our hard-working teachers. It continued with more work on our efforts to craft a new accountability and improvement system for our schools that replaces what we have under the decade-old No Child Left Behind law. And a few late legislative victories have topped it off.

Bowen statement on passage of ed bills

CORRECTION: A previous version of this release contained the wrong LD number and linked to the wrong bill for the second item below, LD 1779. It has been corrected.

Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen issued the following statement Thursday following legislative approval on Wednesday of several key education bills, including: LD 1422, which requires that the state’s public schools transition to a proficiency-based diploma; LD 1779, which moves Maine career and technical education programs toward the full adoption of national industry standards; and LD 1865, which makes it easier for students to access career and technical education courses.

Commission receives notice of 9 charter school proposals

The following is a news release from the Maine Charter School Commission.

AUGUSTA – Nine groups informed the Maine Charter School Commission by Wednesday’s deadline that they plan to submit applications to open public charter schools. Seven of the groups hope to open a school this fall, one in fall 2013, and one is considering both options.

Commissioner’s Update – May 17, 2012

Our efforts to create an accountability and improvement system that works for our students, teachers and schools — and replaces the system we have under the No Child Left Behind Act — are kicking into high gear.

The steering committee in charge of crafting our request for flexibility under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act held its first meeting last week. Three separate working groups will also start meeting in the near future.
