April 22-27 was Recognition Week in Washington, D.C., for all State Teachers of the Year. Although I read the week’s agenda more than once before boarding the plane, I cannot say that I was fully prepared for the magnitude of the experience. I am only now beginning to process just what it meant to me, personally, and what it meant for the elevation of the noble profession of teaching.

That’s why plans are in the works for a number of summer professional development opportunities that will offer educators a chance to catch up with colleagues, do some planning for the coming year and learn about promising practices that could benefit their students.

The Maine Commission for Community Service has released a 72-page guide designed to help teachers effectively use service-learning in their classrooms.
“Service-Learning in Maine – A Guide to Implementing Quality Service-Learning” includes an overview of service-learning goals and strategies for Maine schools, a comprehensive instructional planning guide, and worksheets for both teachers and students.
Deer Isle-Stonington High School students Emily Cormier, Ann Dunham, and Esther Adams help their peers strengthen their writing skills as founding tutors of the school's new Writing Center. Writing Center tutors are enrolled in a course with teacher Lee Lehto that helps them improve their own writing and offer helpful feedback to others.

More than 300 adults in the Piscataquis Valley have earned high school diplomas, others have earned GEDs and many more have gained valuable workforce skills over the past six years thanks to the joint efforts of four school districts in Piscataquis and Penobscot counties.
