Two Students Receive Maine HS Diplomas in Blaine House Ceremony

Bangor and Portland student graduate despite “disruption” to their education

AUGUSTA – Two students who were unable to graduate with their own class received diplomas nonetheless in a Blaine House ceremony on Thursday.

Maine Department of Education Deputy Commissioner Deborah Friedman presented state diplomas to Matthew Cutrufello of Bangor and Katelyn McKay of Portland. Students have been able to receive a state diploma since the Legislature established it in 2007.

Waterville Teacher Finalist for National Award

Laurette Darling of Albert Hall School could win Presidential Award for her science teaching

AUGUSTA – Laurette Darling, a fourth grade teacher at the Albert Hall School in Waterville, has been named a science finalist for the 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence for Mathematics and Science Teaching. If chosen as a winner, Darling will go to Washington, D.C. next year to be recognized.

Groups Needed to Feed Hungry Children Over Summer

Local organizations and federal funds fill the gap

AUGUSTA – Federally funded school breakfasts and lunches help thousands of low-income children in Maine get nutritious meals during the school year. The Maine Department of Education’s Child Nutrition Services program is looking for organizations to sponsor the federally-funded Summer Food Service Program to provide children healthy meals when school is not in session.
