Two Students Receive Maine HS Diplomas in Blaine House Ceremony

Bangor and Portland student graduate despite “disruption” to their education

AUGUSTA – Two students who were unable to graduate with their own class received diplomas nonetheless in a Blaine House ceremony on Thursday.

Maine Department of Education Deputy Commissioner Deborah Friedman presented state diplomas to Matthew Cutrufello of Bangor and Katelyn McKay of Portland. Students have been able to receive a state diploma since the Legislature established it in 2007.

The law allows the state to issue the diplomas to students whose education is disrupted. The diploma is intended for students who meet the necessary requirements, but are not able to meet the graduation requirements of their local school system because of the disruption.

Diploma recipients must demonstrate that they have met the content standards of the Maine Learning Results. Friedman was joined by First Lady Karen Baldacci in awarding the diplomas.

Cutrufello and McKay both plan to pursue further education starting in January.
