Maine science teachers devoted their annual conference on Oct. 7 to understanding the document that will serve as the backbone for the Next Generation Science Standards.
Nearly 300 educators from across the state attended the Maine Science Teachers Association annual conference at Gardiner Area High School and spent much of the day learning about “A Framework for K-12 Science Education,” the document from the National Academies of Science that outlines a new vision for science teaching.
The conference was the first statewide gathering of Maine science teachers since the September announcement that Maine will be one of 20 states to lead the development of the Next Generation Science Standards. The development of the standards is a collaborative effort among educators and others from the participating states to define the science content and concepts students will need to master to be successful in college and tomorrow’s careers.
