Resource available for elementary school principals

The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) has released a new resource for elementary school principals that defines new competencies and outlines approaches for providing high-quality early childhood programs.

Leading Pre-K-3 Learning Communities: Competencies for Effective Principal Practice was developed by a panel of leading practitioners and as summarized from the NAESP website, reinforces the following research:

  • Learning starts early;
  • Supporting children to be prepared when they start school is essential, developing appropriate skills, knowledge and dispositions is fundamental to children’s future success; and
  • Getting children on grade level by third grade, particularly in reading and math, is essential to ensuring they graduate from high school ready for college, careers and life.

This resource is intended to help principals develop and expand their instructional leadership for teachers of prekindergarten through grade three.
