Last week, National and Maine Arts Education Advocacy Day was celebrated; a celebration in Maine that was organized by the Maine Alliance for Arts Education directed by Susan Potters. The celebration featured nearly 150 students from all 16 counties who came to the State House to articulate the importance of arts education to legislators and guests.

Maine school featured for effective, learner-centered instruction

Hall-Dale Middle and High School was one of 18 high-performing schools selected to present at the Ignite ’16 School Showcase in February. Ignite is hosted annually by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Center for Secondary School Redesign. The national showcase convenes school leaders, teachers, and students from the nation’s top middle and high schools to discuss effective practices, programs and strategies with colleagues from across the country.

SkillsUSA Maine showcases champions

“Each of you champions, each runner-up, and each participant in these championships has turned an individual skill into such an art.” This is what Acting Education Commissioner Bill Beardsley told the more than a thousand people last Friday evening at the 2016 SkillsUSA Maine Championship opening ceremony at Hampden Academy.

Maine high school students compete in national poetry contest

The 2016 Maine State Finals for Poetry Out Loud, a National Poetry Recitation Contest, will be held on March 15 at 3 p.m. at the Waterville Opera House. The competition is free and open to the public.

National Principals Leadership Institute, SICA Awards deadline

To celebrate the accomplishments of schools across the United States and Canada, the National Principals Leadership Institute this year has launched the School Innovation and Change Awards (SICA). Five schools will each receive a $10,000 sustainability grant to advance their work.

Outstanding educators sought for Maine talent pool

The Maine DOE is seeking recommendations through April 28 for the 2016 Maine Educator Talent Pool. These distinguished educators may be considered for membership on local and state advisory boards and task forces, as well as be candidates for special recognition through the Department.

Maine Agricultural Teachers of the Year announced

Maine Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) announced the 2016 Teachers of the Year at the 75th Annual Maine Agricultural Trades Show this month. Governor Paul R. LePage was on hand to congratulate Morgan Kerr and Stephanie Enaire from Gray-New Gloucester Middle School.
