Maine Department of Education’s Child Nutrition Consultant Gail Lombardi, RD was presented the 2016 Katherine O. Musgrave Public Service Award earlier this month at the Maine Nutrition Council’s annual conference.
The purpose of the Katherine O. Musgrave Public Service Award is to recognize an individual, organization or institution for outstanding work in nutrition policy, education, or research. Lombardi was nominated due to her work on a variety of initiatives and projects, including the HealthierUS School Challenge which helped many schools prepare for the new menu planning requirements implemented in 2012-13 school year.
She has also played an important role in reducing childhood hunger with her work on the Summer Food Service Program. Over her ten years with the Department, Lombardi has assisted school nutrition directors and staff and eased the concerns of countless parents of children with special dietary needs.
In addition to these contributions, she has been the lead preceptor for the University of Maine Dietetic Internship Program, where she has prepared numerous interns for a career in the community nutrition field.
