International students learn about Maine’s coastline, wind turbines

International students engaged in interactive learning last week to better understand Maine’s effort to utilize its coastline.
Orono High School’s 14 international students from China took a field trip to the Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center (AEWC) at the University of Maine. AEWC employees explained the current research and development of off-shore wind turbines and wood composites.

Report cites career and technical education as a pathway to success
The following is a news release from the Governor’s Office:
AUGUSTA – Today, the LePage administration shared a report released Tuesday by Georgetown University which promotes career and technical education – in both high school and in post-secondary programs – as a significant path to good-paying jobs. The report found that 29 million well-paying middle class jobs go to workers without bachelor’s degrees.

Teacher of the Year finalists named

Two elementary school teachers and one middle school special education teacher have been named the state finalists for the title of 2013 Maine Teacher of the Year.
The 2013 finalists are: Kathy Bousquet, a second- and third-grade looping teacher at Central School in South Berwick; Shannon Shanning, a seventh- and eighth-grade special education teacher at Whittier Middle School in Poland; and Beth Switzer, a fourth-grade teacher at Coastal Ridge Elementary School in York. Five-year HS a reality at Hermon
Governor LePage and I had the opportunity on Monday to attend Hermon High School’s kick-off ceremony for the Bridge Year Program, a pilot project set to launch 15 students on the path toward associate’s degrees starting in July.
