Focus on childhood obesity

AUGUSTA – Maine is among the top 10 states for keeping unhealthy foods out of its schools, and has gained national attention as a result. According to the most report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of schools that don’t allow kids to buy soda or other unhealthy beverages and snacks and candy increased by about 10 percent from 2006 to 2008.

Educators, Public Invited to Education Reform Session

International expert in standards-based education, education commissioner to explain Maine’s work with RISC

AUGUSTA – Every 26 seconds, a student drops out of high school in America. More than 3,000 students each year in Maine do not graduate with their class.

Rich DeLorenzo, co-founder of the non-profit Re-Inventing Schools Coalition Foundation, and Maine Education Commissioner Susan Gendron will present an overview of standards-based education and how it is engaging students and re-shaping education in Maine and elsewhere.

Waiver Extension Gives Schools Flexibility

Schools would not have to raise minimum local required share for 2010-11

AUGUSTA – In an effort to give local school systems more flexibility in responding to the anticipated 2010-2011 reduction in state funding, the Maine Department of Education has proposed extending protections for local taxpayers that were in this year’s budget proposal.
