To better serve districts the Maine DOE is reintroducing Administrative Letters as an official form of communication. Administrative Letters represent the view or position of the Department and provide guidance and interpretation of new or existing laws and regulations and policies.

Four Maine schools have been recognized as “beating the odds” by Newsweek magazine. The schools are Cape Elizabeth High School, Madawaska Middle/High School, Falmouth High School, and Upper Kennebec Valley High School. These schools were chosen based on National Center for Educational Statistics showing student participation in advanced classes, student retention rates, graduation rates, college readiness, and how many students are college-bound.
The Maine DOE is pleased to announce 12 school districts have joined the Department to open or expand high-quality public preschool programs in their communities. Over $4.2 million will be distributed to the districts during the 2016-17 school year as part of the continued funding of the U.S. Department of Education’s Preschool Expansion Grant. The funds are in addition to $6.5 million that are being distributed during 2015-16 to Preschool Expansion Grant subgrantees.

On Monday, Oct. 12 the National Center for State Collaborative (NCSC), Maine’s 2015 alternate assessment for math and English language arts/literacy, made Student Reports available to all registered Test Coordinators and notifications were sent via email. Test Coordinators are advised to download these student reports and make copies for schools, parents, and sending school districts, if applicable. Access to the reports will remain open until Nov. 6.

For over ten years, the Maine DOE and the Maine Arts Commission have been fortunate to celebrate excellence in Maine visual and performing arts education by hosting rotating student art exhibits. These exhibits celebrate the high quality of visual art education in Maine.
This week the math and ELA/literacy parent/guardian student reports are being shipped to schools from Measured Progress. Each report includes a cover letter from Maine DOE’s Acting Commissioner Tom Desjardin. The Department has also developed a sample letter you may use and/or customize for parents. The letter includes a link to a brief webinar to assist parents in understanding student reports.
